Hi all...

I have PHPBB on my server.  A programmer indicated mods could be applied to PHPBB to make it more SEO friendly.

I am trying to determine which would be best to purchase Wowbb or upgrade and apply mods to PHPBB.

Please let me know your opinions if you have used PHPBB and what your thoughts are.

Thank U.

If you enjoy installing security fixes on a regular basis then I would suggest phpBB. But it does have a ton more mods/hacks than WowBB.

Are the security fixes readily available?  Hard to install?  Does the mods/hacks outweigh the hassle/impossibilities of installing the security fixes?

I have a programmer that says that they can install the mod for SEO's sake, as mentioned above.  I just don't wanna be at the mercy of having to pay a programmer to make changes every whip stitch.

I have installed scripts ... don't have a problem with that in itself.  I guess where the problem would be is actually know what/where to find/when installs are needed.

By the way went and registered at your BB.  Super Job!!

Thank U....

Thanks for the comment.

In all honesty.....the major drawback to phpBB is it's popularity. Security fixes can always be found at their main home site if/when they become available. Since it is free, anyone can grab a copy and figure out new ways to hack it apart.

Paid BB programs like WowBB are not so easy simply because it is not redily available to just anyone who pops by. The staff here is always very quick to stomp on and squelch any current or future security based problems the minute they arise. There or not as many mods/hacks available for WowBB as compared to other boards out there, but Wow is still fresh and growing with each new version that they release.

The choice in the long run is yours.

phpbb is free, wowbb is not.
in life, you get what you pay for.

using wowbb says you are serious about your site, phpbb says your cheap.

a user may think should i commit to this site when maybe the admin hasn't? not consiously but unconsiously.

phpbb is lunky and whatever the opposite of robust is.(pale?)

aycan was smart to charge for a licence and offer free support instead of the other way around. this way it protects the brand name from becoming diluded like phpbb. let us pray he never deviates from that business model.

using boards like phpbb now, says whatever people behind this(yours) site are, they certainly aren't near the cutting edge.

phpbb has now become your mommy and daddy's forumware. in other words, it belongs to yesterday.

Thanks for your responses.  My board is currently on Proboards.  I am wanting to move it to my server.  I have not actually used PHPBB and that is why I have turned to asking here.

I would point out a few other things about PHPBB vs. WowBB.

Try getting the PHPBB Team to change their code, even if you have a suggestion to make it better.

I remember when I first switched to PHPBB, I wanted to add a Picture to my user Profiles.  I posted the suggestion and was promptly told by the staff "Why would you want that?" Something very similar happened when I asked them about adding a wysiwyg editor as a standard feature--

A lot of BBs out there take a "I know what you need in a BB more than you do." approach to coding.

I didn't have that here. When I first bought the board, They didn't have the picture attachments show up as thumbnails in the posts, they just showed up as a link. I made the suggestion to put pictures in posts so that they are visible without having to click on them--and the instituted it in the next upgrade. Aycan and the guys may not always agree with what you suggest, but they do listen to the members that purchase their boards.

I don't think any other BB would do for me.

If you are not computer savy (like myself) this is the only place to be!  Marty and Jim did all the work for me!

I recently crashed my site because I deleted a Sql FIle by accident. I had no back up of my forum. On PHPBB I would still be trying to figure it out. Luckily I had WoWBB and they fixed it for me within 20 minutes of me making my support request!

With PhPBB you have to rely on other users of phpbb for support issues.

With WoWBB you get the support of WOWBB Users AND the support of the WoWBB staff. WoWBB Rocks.

as an experienced computer user and site builder, who has used both wowbb and phpbb i would say that phpbb is much better not only because of ease of use, but because it is FREE, it looks many many times better than wowbb, and not very many sites use wowbb so it looks very unproffessional if you have wowbb forums on your site.

the WOWbb review you post is great and very positive with a 7 out of 10 rating

Conclusion
As we can see below, WowBB, even using a proprietary model (which is rare in forum software world), provides many unique features that will probably make you use it if they are vital for your community.

The phpbb review might higher, but so what?! what is your point and why did you even make those 2 posts? what is your agenda?
